Childcare Approval Scheme

This page contains information which applies to nannies working in Wales.

The Childcare Approval Scheme is accessible to home childcarers working in Wales, which enables employers to access the available financial assistance for nanny employers. You do not have to live in Wales to register, but you must be working there. The Childcare Approval Scheme is administered by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW).

Nannies in other countries in the UK should register with the appropriate regulatory body for the country where they work.

Requirements for nannies to register

Nannies must have:

  1. "obtained one of the qualifications from time to time specified in a list maintained by the Welsh Government"
  2. "obtained a paediatric first-aid certificate within the 3 years prior to the application for approval independent of the criteria mentioned above. It must contain as a minimum the following areas: dealing with emergencies, resuscitation, choking, shock and anaphylactic shock in babies and children."
  3. completed a DBS check

Although nanny insurance is not a requirement we strongly recommend that anyone working as a nanny holds appropriate liability insurance, and members of BAPN are entitled to a discount on their insurance.

Cost of registration

Registration currently costs £96 for the first year, and renewal is £55. The initial registration fee includes a DBS check, and a document verification service is available via the Post Office for £8.75. Registration on the DBS update service is £13 per year.
